Constantin Andreevich Somov was born in St. Petersburg on November 30, 1869 into the family of the senior curator at the Hermitage, artist and art historian, Andrei Ivanovich Somov and his wife, Nadezhda Constantinovna, an excellent musician.

He studied at the Imperial Academy under Ilya Repin; inspired by Watteau and Fragonard, then he joined three friends in using watercolor and gouache to do illustrations for periodicals.

In 1913 Somov became an Academician, and in 1918 a professor of the Art College.
Following the Russian Revolution, he emigrated to the United States, and moved to Paris. He was buried at the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Cemetery.
